Meet the Makers and Fabulous Fashionistas
Where we source
We have some amazing creators we work with, we are very proud of stocking some true artists, and hope you will love them too. We have also started making fascinators, baby bootees, gloves and hats in-house (Mrs M's got lots of ideas still in the pipeline, and a house full of flowers and feathers waiting for attention, and we're so lucky to have the amazing Daisy, not just an assistant extraordianire but a creator too).
Generally we do not source from Brighton makers unless they have no other outlet here, as our treaures are strong character pieces and we'd hate you to turn up at a party with the same rubber chicken handbag as someone else!!!
So many of our pieces are exclusive one-offs for Barbary Lane, others are limited editions and limited stock, and then we source the smaller fun stuff from all over the world.
The list is increasing, and more profiles are to be added here, but to start with we would like to introduce:
Diane Goldie - Mermaid Kimonos
"I make hand painted garments and bags and have recently had the opportunity to make garments for the very fabulous outsider artist and Fabulous Fashionista, Sue Kreitzman, and she keeps me very busy ( and very happy). I do sometimes have time to make things for others too."
Anne Sophie Cochevelou - Jewellery
Anne-Sophie Cochevelou is an East-London based French fashion, costume and jewellery designer and performance maker. Her work attempts to explore the concept of wearable art and performative aspect of costume through social interaction and upcycled material. She creates costume-based performance in clubs, galleries and art places like the Barbican and Battersea Art Centre as well as bespoke costumes for theatre companies and private parties.
In her creations, she uses a lots of toys as a common reference from the collective imagery, a reminder of childhood that everybody shares in every country, playing on the feeling of nostalgia and remembrance and the "uncanny". Anne Sophie has recently featured in several high-end international fashion magazines as well as having her own one-woman exhibition in Paris. One to watch!
Anna McDade - Copper Jewellery
"I am a self-taught jewellery maker and designer specialising in cuff bracelets and lockets, though I make a whole spectrum of jewellery in sterling silver, copper, brass, gold, steel and aluminium. My designs are often inspired by nature and natural forms, I create pieces incorporating birds, animals, flowers, trees and abstract flowing forms reminiscent of Art Nouveau, Gothic and the Celtic artwork of my Scottish and Irish ancestry. I produce unique and highly decorative pieces using recycled and sustainable metals and materials wherever possible. Although I have a highly individual style, I welcome commissions and have a range of jewellery making skills from etching to hand piercing. Each piece is completely handmade and unique, as similar designs vary. Each design is also limited in its production."
